Felipe Alou has truly had a memorable "baseball journey." He became the first player direct from the Dominican Republic to play in the major leagues. Alou discusses the racism he encountered as a minor leaguer in Louisiana and the lasting effect this can have on an individual. Alou spent an equal amount of time between the San Francisco Giants and the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves. He mentions that Milwaukee was the last place he wanted to be dealt to and doesn't say why but I believe it would have been due to the weather. He ended up enjoying his time with the Braves but mentions the experience players deal with near the end of their career when they start moving from one team to another. Another unique experience of his was when he along with his brothers Matty and Jesus occupied the same outfield for the Giants. This has never happened previously in the history of baseball.

Unfortunately for the city and baseball the 1994 season was cut short due to a strike and shoddy ownership led to the city losing its team when they eventually moved to Washington, D.C.

Alou discusses the problems that arise when the paychecks dry up and the savings are small due to supporting a number of family members at home in the Dominican Republic. Fortunately his vast experiences in the game enabled him to find coaching jobs including one with the Detroit Tigers who were under the leadership of Dominican friend Luis Pujols and several more years back with the San Francisco Giants.

I was drawn in from the forward and knew this was going to be a good book. Many times I would start books and never finish them but this book was not that way. I read it in just a couple of days only having to stop because it was still the during the work week and needed some sleep and then go to work. I was so sad to hear what Mr Alou had to go through when he first started playing. I had the pleasure of being able to tell him personally that I really enjoyed his book when I saw him during Spring Training. After reading all that he experienced I now understand why some items that occurred later in like happened the way they did. I highly recommend this book to everyone to read, not just baseball fans as it gives you a glimpse of what life was like and how someone can rise above that.
Alou by Felipe Alou with Peter Kerasotis is perhaps the finest baseball autobiography I have read. Kerasotis has achieved one of the most difficult tasks confronting a writer—to convey not only the thoughts and experiences of the subject but also the feelings within the story being told.
A casual fan might recall Felipe as one of three brothers who played in the outfield at the same time with the San Francisco Giants back in the early 60s. Reading Alou, we come to grips with the distance traveled, both figurative and literal, of this baseball pioneer and societal voyager. We sense that Felipe’s impoverished upbringing shapes the righteousness that guides his life and career. We feel the stings of outright racism and are repulsed by the more subtle forms of prejudice and exclusion (the unofficial caste system that demarcated the relationships between African American and Latino players is particularly revelatory). We share in the grief over the accidental death of Felipe’s oldest son, Felipe Jr., at the age of 14. We also absorb his satisfaction and pride in achievement for his brothers, his son, and his nephews who all left their marks on major league baseball; for his country, whose brutal dictator victimized its people; for his friends, teammates, and players under his managerial care (particularly the young Pedro Martinez); and, in an unaffectedly humble way, for himself.
Of course, no baseball journal would be complete without the story telling that has been part of the game since its mythic beginnings. Throughout this wholly enjoyable book are sprinkled deeply personal, moving, and sometimes hilarious anecdotes, the seasoning that is the distinctively rich and unique flavoring of baseball literature. I found it refreshing that the stories are told without the malice that seems concomitant with the internet age.
Baseball fans have been witness to the many eras and episodes during which Felipe has been part of the game integration, franchise displacement, expansion, divisional play, specialization, the DH, free agency, interleague play, PEDs, and global reach, among others. Alou chronicles in a personal and wonderfully florid way the genuine perspective and personal journey of one of baseball’s true noblemen.
After learning about Felipe Alou a few years ago, I became interested in his life. This book definitely goes beyond the sport and looks deeply into Felipe as an individual, player and manager.

Peter Kerasotis has captured the ugliness of racism, the tenacity and determination of Felipe’s will to overcome many obstacles, and the heart and spirit of a man who helped shape and inspire many directly as well as indirectly through his actions.

For the historian, there’s plenty to learn about the Dominican Republic during and after dictator Trujillo’s rule, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the US.

And for the baseball fan and sports enthusiasts, the language of baseball transports you to the stadium where you can almost hear the crack of the bat as hits and home runs against equally amazing pitchers are described. Felipe shares not only stats but also stories of many other baseball greats. Stories of friendships, of greatness, of anger and disappointment, and of unfairness will make you both smile and empathize.

Overall, highly recommended read.
